Jesus Wins – Part 3 of 4
Matthew 2.13-23

Revelation 19.16 … he has this name written: KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS.” (niv)   

v. 2 “Where is he who has been born king of the Jews? For we saw his star when it rose and have come to worship him.” (esv) 

HEROD’S FAILURE TO DEFEAT JESUS SHOWS THAT …     

God’s Son IS THE Rightful Ruler                     

Luke 2.34–35 Behold, this child is appointed for the fall and rising of many in Israel, and for a sign that is opposed (and a sword will pierce through your own soul also) …” (esv) 

v. 13 … Herod is about to search for the child, to destroy him.” (esv)       

Matthew 10.34 Don’t assume that I came to bring peace on the earth. I did not come to bring peace, but a sword.”(csb)

v. 15 This was to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet, ‘Out of Egypt I called my son.’” (esv)    

Our Joy IS HIS Lasting Legacy                          

v. 16 “… he sent and killed all the male children in Bethlehem and in all that region who were two years old or under …” (esv)

v. 18 “A voice is heard in Ramah, weeping and great mourning, Rachel weeping for her children and refusing to be comforted, because they are no more.” (niv)

Jeremiah 31.16-17 “Keep your voice from weeping, and your eyes from tears, for there is a reward for your work, declares the LORD, and they shall come back from the land of the enemy.  There is hope for your future, declares the LORD, and your children shall come back to their own country.” (esv)  

His Humiliation IS OUR Salvation                      

v. 23 … he went and lived in a city called Nazareth, so that what was spoken by the prophets might be fulfilled, that he would be called a Nazarene.” (esv)

Isaiah 53.3 He was like someone people turned away from; he was despised, and we didn’t value him.” (csb)      

1 Peter 2.24 He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree … By his wounds you have been healed.” (esv)
